Aghberka Monastery

Sasun is a world to amaze, delight, impress, convey unique feelings. Not only were many myths, songs and dances born in these mountains, but also exceptional historical monuments.

And among these monuments, the AGHBERKA monastery, the exceptional wonder of Sasun Khut, has its own place. Perhaps we are dealing with the largest monastery I have ever seen on the other side of the river. In addition to the wonderful location, its interesting structure makes the impressions unspeakably powerful. The name is associated with the healing and sanctified spring, near which the monastery was built. By the way, I was lucky enough to drink water from the spring. The name is not only Aghberka and is mentioned in a similar way Aghberik, but also has the name Vandir. The dating of the main buildings of the monastery dates back to the 9th-13th centuries. Traditions lead us to the first century, when it was built by St. Thaddeus. One of the churches also bears the name of St. Taevos. Of course, as in the case of almost all Armenian monasteries, the Aghberka monastery has been ravaged by treasure thieves. It has also been helped by the fact that it is relatively far from settlements.

In the #Unseen series, we tell about little-known, but extremely valuable monuments of Armenian heritage, as well as about nature, which are the result of more than 10 years of research by Gevorg Petrosyan and Hamshen Tour.
